Performing Umrah is not merely a physical journey to the Holy Land it is a spiritual voyage filled with remembrance (dhikr), prayers, and hope for the mercy of Allah ﷻ. Every step from tawaf to sa’i carries deep spiritual significance, especially when accompanied by sincere supplications and remembrance as taught by the Prophet ﷺ.
Here are some recommended acts and prayers to perform throughout the Umrah pilgrimage, based on the Qur’an and the Sunnah of Rasulullah ﷺ.
As you step into Masjid al-Haram for the first time, it is recommended to recite this dua:
اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ
Allahummaf-tah li abwāba rahmatik
“O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.”
(Muslim)
There are no fixed supplications for each round of tawaf. Pilgrims are encouraged to make personal prayers and remembrance that come from the heart. However, the following dua is highly recommended when passing between the Yemeni Corner (Rukun Yamani) and the Black Stone (Hajar Aswad):
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً، وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً، وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
Rabbanaa ātinaa fid-dunyā ḥasanah, wa fil-ākhirati ḥasanah, wa qinā ‘adzāban-nār
“Our Lord, grant us goodness in this world and goodness in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”
(Al-Baqarah, 2:201)
Once the seven rounds of tawaf are completed, it is sunnah to pray two rakaat behind the Station of Ibrahim (Maqam Ibrahim), while reciting the verse:
وَاتَّخِذُوا مِن مَّقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مُصَلًّى
Wattakhidhu min maqāmi Ibrāhīma muṣallā
“And take the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.”
(Al-Baqarah, 2:125)
It is recommended to recite Al-Fatihah and Al-Kafirun in the first rakaat, and Al-Fatihah and Al-Ikhlas in the second.
After prayer, drink from the blessed water of Zamzam and make a heartfelt dua according to your needs.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The water of Zamzam is for whatever intention it is drunk for.”
(Ibn Majah)
Make the best intention — whether for healing, stronger faith, or the acceptance of your Umrah
a. Upon Reaching Mount Safa
Recite the verse:
Innaṣ-Ṣafā wal-Marwata min sha‘ā’irillāh…
(Al-Baqarah, 2:158)
Then say:
Nabda’u bimā bada’allāhu bih
“We begin with what Allah has commanded us to begin with.”
Climb the hill of Safa, face the Kaabah, raise your hands, and repeat the following remembrance three times, making personal duas in between:
اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ
Allāhu akbar (3x), lā ilāha illallāh waḥdahu lā sharīka lah…
“Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah, alone, without partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and praise. He gives life and causes death, and He has power over all things.”
(Muslim)
b. Between the Green Lights
Men are encouraged to jog lightly (harwala) between the two green lights, while women should continue walking calmly with remembrance and prayer.
After completing the seven rounds of sa’i and reaching Mount Marwah, pilgrims perform tahallul:
By doing so, the pilgrim officially exits the state of ihram, completing the rites of Umrah.
Throughout Umrah, increase remembrance and prayers such as:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى
Allahumma innī as’aluka al-hudā wat-tuqa wal-‘afāfa wal-ghinā
“O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment.” (Hadith Muslim)
Allahummaghfir lī, warḥamnī, wahdinī, wa ‘āfinī, warzuqnī
“O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, grant me health, and provide for me.” (Hadith Muslim)
Every prayer uttered in the Holy Land holds immense value. Even the simplest dua can be a reason for Allah’s forgiveness and mercy.
So, make the most of every step fill it with remembrance, gratitude, and sincere repentance.
“Call upon Me; I will respond to you.” (Qur’an Al-Mu’min, 40:60)
May Allah accept our Umrah, bless our journey, and make it a source of forgiveness and spiritual renewal. 🌙
